Kyungmi Kim

Kyungmi Kim is a choreographer and dance artist from Seoul whose work follows one inquiry, Body Memories / Nature Memories, which begins from the conviction that a body keeps what it was never told and that the natural world holds its memory in the same way — not as story but as material, in the elements that a body and a landscape are equally made from. Over fifteen years her solo work has been presented in Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand and the United States, with Butoh theatre in Hong Kong, Beijing and Bangkok. As an Asian Cultural Council fellow she performed at Judson Memorial Church in New York with Movement Research, and in 2016 she founded ZeroGravity & Co., a Seoul organization working with communities outside dance, including work in Christchurch with residents living after the earthquake. Recent projects include a daily drift across Kavala and Philippi in northern Greece and a series of site-specific dance films made in Paris. Her method is one body, one place and duration: she walks a single route until it stops being something she looks at and becomes a condition she works from, gathering movement, video, photography and text as she goes. At All That We Are she will make a body poetry dedicated to that coast and its wilderness — a form she is developing in which movement, image and text are not three channels laid side by side but a single act: paper coated and exposed outdoors on the route, carrying the trace of her body together with the leaves, sand and light of that ground, and written into by hand.
